A Call for Patience and Support
I don't post much but I am a proud graduate of Virginia Tech and an emotionally invested fan. I also assume I'm in the minority here based on the threads I've read. I know a lot of us are frustrated after starting 0β2, and I understand why emotions are running high. But I think itβs worth stepping back and looking at this in perspective.
We lost to two very good football teams. South Carolina, currently ranked #11, has an established program with real chemistry. Vanderbilt, while unranked, looks much stronger than expected and played like a team thatβs ahead of us in terms of development because they are. Despite Vanderbilt's history in the SEC, these werenβt cupcakes.
Yes, the results were rough. The defense showed promise in the opener but struggled in Game 2. Offensively, we were anemic against South Carolina, then showed some improvement in the first half against Vanderbilt before things unraveled. Thatβs disappointing, no doubt. But letβs remember that, while we all agree that we should be further along by now, we have a new defensive coordinator and a new (but experienced) offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. That kind of transition takes time to gel.
I believe Brent Pry and his staff deserve the chance to make adjustments in the next two out-of-conference games before we jump into ACC play. This is a low point, but not the lowest I've personally felt when I put it all in context. Iβd rather withhold final judgment until we see how this season and next season unfold. Yes, I said the next season.
I know patience isnβt easy right now, but our coaches and players need our empathy and support now more than ever. Letβs give them the space to regroup and prove what they can do.
Go Hokies!

Pettigrew
Not sure why Pettigrew is leaving UNC but could be because he's sitting behind Cade Lautt who went 7-4 this past season and who Andy Smith handled during the regular season dual 10-3. Just not sure how much success Pettigrew might have in a comparatively stronger 197 room with Andy Smith and Thomas Stewart.

My take on HWT
It appears Trephan has Catka figured out and I'll be pleasantly surprised if Jimmy Mullen starts as a true freshman with any better results at the ACC or NCAA tournament. I believe Tom Crook's twin brother Jack Crook wrestles at Harvard so I can't imagine that the scenario isn't on the table.
Slavikouski could benefit from Ty Walz' instruction and make a difference for us at ACCs and may have an even bigger impact at the NCAAs.

Yaraslau Slavikouski
Senior at Harvard that could make a difference at heavy weight and had entered the transfer portal on January 26 but decided to remain with team. Went one consi round further than Trephan at the NCAA tournament losing to Davison in SV. He and Trephan won their first championship round but lost their second. Slavikouski would have at least placed 6th had he beat Davison. Davison went on to lose to Hendrickson (Air Force) and beat Elam (Mizzou) for 5th.
Also, Slavikouski beat Trephan 5-3 at the 2022 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.

Beware of the Hype: Analysis of 2022 Transfers (Div 1)
Last year, Nick Kosko of 247Sports published an article titled, β**College wrestling transfer portal: Best additions, ranked, ahead of 2022-23 season**β.
Link: [https://247sports.com/Article/OT7-West-Regional-Day-One-R...
I went back and took a look at how each transfer referenced in the article performed in the NCAA tournament provided they qualified.
1. Real Woods transferred to Iowa from Stanford and placed 2nd at NCAAs at 141. Lost to Northern Coloradoβs Alirez in the championship.
2. Taylor Lamont transferred to Wisconsin from Utah Valley. Qualified for NCAA tournament but lost to **Sam Latona** in the first round in SV. Wrestled back but did not place.
3. Matt Finesilver transferred to Michigan from Duke. Qualified for NCAA tournament and lost to Drexler's Bonino in the first round. Wrestled back but did not place.
4. Dom Demas transferred from Oklahoma to Cal Poly. Qualified for the NCAA tournament but lost to Cornellβs Diakomihalis in the first round. Wrestled back but did not place.
5. Michael Beard transferred to Lehigh from Penn State. Qualified for NCAA tournament and lost to Illinois' Braunagel in the second round. Wrestled back but did not place.
6. Gerrit Nijenhuis transferred to Oklahoma from Purdue. Qualified for NCAA tournament and lost to NIU's Olejnik in the first round. Wrestled back but did not place.
7. Will Betancourt transferred to Penn State from Ohio State but isn't listed on Penn State's roster. Did not qualify for NCAA tournament.
8. Rocky Jordan transferred to Chattanooga from Ohio State. Qualified for NCAA tournament and lost to Drexler's O'Malley in the first round. Wrestled back but did not place.
9. Tate Samuelson transferred to Lehigh from Wyoming. Qualified for NCAA tournament and lost to UNI's Keckeisen in the second round. Wrestled back but did not place.
10. Joe Heilmann transferred to Rutgers from UNC. Qualified for NCAA tournament and lost to Chattanooga's Palmer in the first round. Wrestled back but did not place.
Outside of Real Woods. No transfer listed in the 247 article made a significant difference though Finesilver did win 3 consolation matches before he lost contributing something to Michigan's sixth place finish.
2022 transfers that placed at the NCAA tournament include:
2nd Place (141) - Real Woods of Iowa (Stanford) - 1 Seed
2nd Place (285) - Greg Kerkvliet of Penn State (Ohio State) - 3 seed
2nd Place (125) - Matt Ramos of Purdue (Minnesota) - 4 seed
3rd Place (133) - Michael McGee of Arizona State (Old Dominion) - 4 seed
4th Place (149) - Kyle Parco of Arizona State (Fresno State) - 3 seed
4th Place (125) - Anthony Noto of Lock Haven (**NC State**) - 8 seed
5th Place (125) - Liam Cronin of Nebraska (Indiana University) - 3 seed
5th Place (197) - Lucas (Andrew) Davison of (Northwestern) - 30 seed
6th Place (184) - Trey Munoz of Oregon State (Arizona State) - 4 seed
7th Place (197) - Max Dean of Penn State (Northern Colorado) - 9 seed
7th Place (184) - Will Feldkamp of Clarion (NIU) - 14 seed
8th Place (149) - Michael Blockhus of Norther Iowa (Minnesota) - 11 seed
8th Place (125) - Killian Cardinale of West Virginia (Old Dominion) - 28 seed
Note: Old Dominion discontinued its wrestling program after the 2019/2021 season which explains the transfers.
Results reconciled from the following sources:
2023 NCAA Division 1 Championships Tournament Results: [https://www.trackwrestling.com/predefinedtournaments/Main...
Top Transfers at the NCAA Tournament this Year: [https://www.flowrestling.org/articles/10711845-top-transf...
**Fun Fact**
Trombley 125 @ NC State lost to Purdue's Ramos in the second round of the championship bracket. Trombley wrestled back and won one bout before getting knocked out by Northern Colorado's Populin scoring a total of 1.5 points without placing.
Noto 125 @ Lock Haven (formerly NC State) won two bouts in the championship bracket before losing to Spencer Lee by major decision. Noto wrestled back and won another two bouts by decision before losing to ASU's Courtney scoring a total of 12 points, 3 points between the championship and consolation brackets and 9 placement points for placing 4th.
Assuming the same results and had Noto stayed with NC State and won the starting job, NC State would have hypothetically scored 58.5 points and tied for 6th with Michigan.
No material change to the ACC tournament though as Trombley beat Ventresca in sudden victory to win the ACC championship.

#Team100
Isn't Michigan referring to this season's team as #Team100 because it's their wrestling program's 100th anniversary?

Questions for Coach Robie
1. I wouldn't mind a sneak peak into how he and the staff plan to manage next years roster specifically focusing on 133, 184, and 285.
1a. With Nathan Traxler leaving and assuming Hunter Catka is ready to assume the heavy weight starting spot who will back him up at heavyweight? Will we target a transfer?
1b. With Hunter Bolen departing at 184 will we see Thomas Stewart start at true freshman or is it even physically possible to see Dakota Howard at 184?
1c. Will Sam Latona move to 133? If so, who will start at 125, Eddie Ventresca?. If, not could we see Tom Crook at 133 provided he can get down to 133.
2. Hokie Nation wants to see Dakota Howard experience sustained success. The junkyard dog is a fan favorite. What will it take for him to get to the NCAAs at 197 or does Andy Smith have a legitimate shot at 197 next season?
