Revenue vs expenses
Posted a few pages back that football can be played across country and even more so basketball since it is both revenue generating and smaller team size thus less expenses. Financially there are revenues and expenses. And my business experience has taught me that it is much more economical to cut expenses than generate revenue since generating revenue takes lots of expenses. To run a football program there are lots of expenses. The revenue is far outpacing the expenses for the P2 right now. But for Olympic sports the costs are only going up and fast. Anyone seen the price of airline tickets and gas lately? So it may make sense for the Big10 to develop more regional partners out west for those geographic orphans to reduce Olympic sports travel costs. Thus the revenue generated by a new school addition can be lower than the conference current payout amount by what ever amount travel expenses can be reduced through closer geographic rivals. Just a theory but by how much is anyones guess. The sec may not have this problem as much since they are more compact geographically.

You have two sides of a balance sheet
There are two sides to a balance sheet, revenue and expenses. My point was that Olympic sports travel costs are probably fairly high. So, perhaps by having some closer geographic schools it will lower the cost of Olympic sports travel by some amount which then means revenue does not need to be equal to current payouts. Probably a long shot but that is just a thought.

Why expansion economic hurdles could be lowerβ¦
One idea I was thinking about is that the P2 may be motivated to expand to 24 at minimum. This could be due to non revenue generating Olympic sports. Leave the cross country charter flights to football and basketball but bus rides to more closely aligned geographic conference members for Olympic sports. Saves money and time but means you need to expand to get some closer schools. That could change the economic hurdles perhaps for some schools in smaller markets. Just a thought.
