To quote Moneyball

“A bunt is an out, take it” We only have 3 outs per inning & a bunt gives up 1 of them. The next players still need to follow through. Runners on first & second with no outs to start the game & you give up an out to move them up. One scores easily if the batter gets a hit & you still have no outs. “If you play for one run early, that’s usually what you get”
