Serious Question: Why more than 16 team conferences?

The more I think about the "Big 2". Does expanding to more than 16 team conferences make financial sense? Does that add additional revenue to the existing teams or does it diminish the current pool already received? I know with Notre Dame still in play that would add significant value for any conference, but still there has to be a limit. I'm curious if that is 18, 20, 24, 32 teams? I have no clue. Just seems to me that has to have been discussed internally to make the juice worth the squeeze. Unless, the goal is to break away from the NCAA model as we know it. Then, I could see a grab for teams to increase members and develop two rival conferences that crown their own championship. PS - Love this board and all the insight/ opinions from different vantages.
