Posting History (21)

Indeed, there are!

I’ve linked Georgia’s, men’s tennis powerhouse, below…there’s probably even better now. The coach and his two assistants share one room as an office - same for the women. Several matches a year have been delayed because there’s a leak on Court 3 that always causes problems when it rains.

Head coach Jim Thompson is one of, if not the, most underrated…

coaches VT has ever had. The last few years they’ve floated around .500, but he once had that program on a run of 12 NCAATs in 14 years. All while playing with some of the WORST facilities in the country. If they were even one of the top-50 funded programs in the country, they’d likely be perennial Sweet 16 team,

From what I've gathered from ath dept. folks...

There's a drastic difference in treatment for the broadcast unit at VT compared to everyone else. It seems to stem from the leader of their external department, not Whit. It's not the first time something like this has happened, just usually other sports (lacrosse, vb, soccer). I went to one of those games last season and everyone else seemed to be doing their job.

Traustason with the first hat-trick since 2019

This side has been begging for a goalscorer like that. Great to see. Tough, but manageable, slate to finish the regular season.

Hokies draw, 1-1!

Having a defender come off the bench for his first career appearance, play up top and nab a goal for a draw against a ranked team… might be the most fortunate break for VT Athletics in ages. We’ll take it!

Marshall MSOC playing with different rules?

Despite it being nearly week 5 of the college soccer season, Marshall is adding two players to its roster. 1. An international student that’s just joining for the first time. 2. A player from last year that was drafted 10 months ago, but is now (late September) deciding to return to school and will play this week. Now, it’s very possible they have some clever admins that have done this all by the book. But there’s also a word (that VT doesn’t live in) where these things just happen for schools that prioritize winning over ‘the right way.’ You’ll often hear, “Marshall (and Vermont) won a national championship in soccer. How come we can’t?” And it’s because things like that slide at other schools. Not saying it’s wrong. Not saying it’s right. Just the way it goes around Blacksburg.

It was a tough game.

Didn’t feel as dominant as the box score shows. Furman hunkered down and didn’t offer Tech a lot of space to be creative. A chance at three ACC points this Sunday, but they can’t take it for granted.

MSOC: Some optimism

Encouraging signs amidst a ‘let-down’ result. Yes, as a ranked team at home, you want to win those games. Even more so when leading late into the half. That being said, two good things I’m seeing from this team… 1. Scoring goals despite having a goal-scoring problem. This team (for several years) has cried out for a good striker. There’s reason to believe one is still on the bench injured, but the fact that they’re still scoring goals (including multiple against good opponents) shows that a system is working. 2. General grit of this team. They find a way to get results in tough situations. The last two games have been games in the past few years that the team would struggle mentally in. Kudos to them.

Gotta love the unpredictability of soccer.

Out-shot 10-1, but leading where it counts. Have a feeling this might 45 minutes of holding on for dear life, but we'll see.

Two really good chances for Marshall, luck to be 0-0 still.

First 15 minutes were pretty even, but Marshall starting to piece it together. Great save by Joseph on one, terrible mistake right after that.

Huge opportunity for the men vs. No. 2 tonight.

Expect more of a challenge than what Ohio State put up last week. Marshall has gone all in on international players for several years, hence their national championship in 2020-21. Hokies rallied to beat them 3-2 when the Herd were No. 1 in fall 2021. That was a pretty testy affair. Marshall tends to get some 50-50 (or worse) calls go their way when they play at home. Win, lose or draw, we'll learn a lot about the Hokies by how they handle the mental and physical challenges of this game.

Box score tells a lot of the story.

LU held 8-3 advantage for SOG. Wasn't total domination by the Flames, but certainly deserved at least a draw. Campbell currently beating HPU, so that might not be a walk in the park on Sunday, either.

Lots of youth in that back line.

Hopefully they get a lot of those missteps out of their system now.

Good to see Price get on from the bench.

Best to be careful with her during the non-conference slate. Hope Salama's absence isn't serious.
