Clearly define the Henson/Arrington position.
Takedown or not? It was called numerous different ways throughout the season and during the postseason.

Well Iβve heard better news thenβ¦
With the current NIL climate, I can certainly understand young men wanting make the most of a fantastic NCAA performance. Whether that is behind any of this or not, I wish him well no matter his decision as Iβm sure he is trying to do what he feels is best for himself and his family. Selfishly, I hope he stays a Hokie!

Not for lack of effort
Is there a reason you felt the need to point that out? I honestly donβt understand the way some βfansβ feel the need to rag on the athletes that give their all and for whatever reason, come up shortβ¦ especially those that donβt understand the effort involved. Not singling you out here. This applies to several on this message board. I understand the frustration, but will NEVER understand calling out or criticizing our guys on a public forum. It serves no purpose at best and reflects poorly on our fan base to our athletes, potential recruits, and their families. Bottom line, donβt say anything here that you wouldnβt say directly to those mentioned above.

From an outsiderβs perspectiveβ¦
From my own experience with college wrestling, cutting weight is so physically and mentally challenging that I believe Sam would be much better off moving up at least one weight class and hitting the weights hard in the off-season. I have no inside knowledge on how Sam was dealing with the weight cut, but he clearly was dealing with something that hindered his performance this year. Tom needs to get his redshirt next year and spend that time in the weight room. With his frame, he could well be a 157 when he returns.

You canβt completely disregard past seasons.
The defending national champ is ranked #1 going into the season based on last year. That does not earn him a high seed at nationals, but he had zero losses in matches he wrestled this year and is the betting favorite to win again this year by the majority of fans (healthy or not). If the two βlossesβ and the lack of matches necessary for an RPI disqualified him for a top 4 ranking based on the set formula, fine. Rank him in the range he qualified for based on the formula, but use the leeway the committee is allowed (one or two spots in either direction) to place him opposite the wrestler that earned the #1 ranking. The committee did a terrible job with this weight class which is why so many are talking about itβ¦ and not just VT fans.

I disagree.
In most cases, seeding can be very subjective (at least within one or two spots. In my opinion the committee should try their best to separate conference finalists into opposite halves of the bracket. They certainly had the leeway to make a more equitable bracket. No matter how you view it, the two wrestlers almost universally regarded as the two best in the weight class should not be in the same half of the bracket, much less in the same quarter!

I think either couldβve been called either wayβ¦ based on the current rules
The only difference I saw (and this should not, but may have influenced the ref) is that Caleb continued working to improve his position when he did not get the call and Arrington looked up at the ref, perhaps to indicate that he felt he had control.

Not if he goes 141 next year
I really think he needs to go up if he stays another year. His frame can certainly handle it and he has shown signs of burn out most likely attributed to the weight cut.

Iβd feel that he is entitled to his religious viewβ¦
Whether or not it agreed with mine. Of course he believes his view is right and the others are wrong and has every right to say that in an effort to sway others. Thatβs what evangelism is all about. Whatβs not right is to try and suppress the views of others or to threaten those with opposing views. Aaron did none of that in that interview

He answered the question asked of him.
And quite honestly. I really saw nothing wrong in what he said and admired the fact that he chose that opportunity to share his faith. Certainly much more admirable than beating his chest, flexing to the crowd, and proclaiming how great he is. I would love to have that young man on my team and will root for him as long as he isnβt facing a Hokie.

I love the optimistic outlook!
Coupled with our strong recruiting classes, a performance like that would definitely create a buzz in the wrestling community. Probably a best case scenario, but 4 in the finals is not all that far fetched considering at one time or another, there has been speculation that there could be a Hokie in the finals at 5 different weights. In addition to those 5, with the right draw and a strong performance, I wouldnβt be shocked to see a top 8 finish from any of the remaining 5.

I think they mustβve drawn the short strawsβ¦
I donβt think Marinelli or Dennis wanted anything to do with being in that corner.

Assuming Mekhi is still interested
In bumping to 184 (it should be his call) and the coaches were ok with it, was wondering if Sam could comfortably make the cut to 174? He does look undersized at 184. I do think 184 might be a better option for Mekhi as far as staying healthy and at the top of his game mentally. Cutting weight definitely wears on you over the course of the season. Canβt imagine seven years of it in a D1 setting!

Threw a lot of BP to my son as well back in the dayβ¦
Actually had to have elbow surgery that I can attribute, at least partially, to that. Well worth it though. All that time spent with him as a kid was pricelessβ¦ plus at 33, he is still playing baseball. π

I can see the next match going much differently.
Unfortunately, the end result will be the same unless Mekhi finds some offense from neutral, a sense of urgency from the bottom, and more persistence on top. The deck was stacked against him in this one given the crowd. Not saying all the stall calls werenβt warranted, but I canβt see the referee pulling the trigger on that many in a neutral environment at NCAAs. Hoping he was just not willing to show all his cards in a meaningless exhibition match and is saving some tricks for when it really counts. Weβll seeβ¦ he has the talent, but seven years in a D1 wrestling room is a LONG time to keep the fire lit.

Iβm ok with three point TD as long as they make a reversal three as well
A wrestler that gives up a flash TD and immediately reverses his opponent and rides him out for the remainder of the period should NOT be down 3-2

As a compromise,
Why not leave admission free, but charge for parking in the lot adjacent to Cassell? Those unwilling to pay would just need to park a little further away. You could also charge for varied levels of priority seating (floor or first row seats?) while leaving the majority of seats free of charge. Another option would be to offer those perks as additional incentives to donors.

Like this a lot.
Looks to be a hammer on top. Finished 3rd at Ironman but avenged his one loss with a 5-2 win in the consolation finals. Also had an impressive win over Mason Gibson in that tourney.

Great finals matches this year.
Loved the fact that we're beginning to see some conference parity. B10 is still the best, but only 3 B10 champs this year.
Also like where or program is and where it is heading. We had three guys beat NCAA finalists this year...

Sam gave Vito his only loss in the dual this year.
And also the closest match in this tourney... Essentially a one point match neglecting the TD given up in a desperation attempt from Sam with little time left

Andy scored no points this year for us, but I really like his upside.
Great improvement since last year and still has room for a lot of improvement physically by getting after in the weight room. I know there are those that are disenchanted with him after this year's tournament, but some of you may be forgetting that earlier in the year he beat Tanner Sloan (who will be competing in the finals tonight). I think he will use that as extra motivation to work all that much harder in the off-season.

That last match was typical of our efforts so far today.
I certainly believe there are some injuries at play here, but win or lose, over half the team wrestled like a 285lber on our feet. Hopefully just wrestling a little tight and will turn it loose more in the next round

Agreed. Van Ness is a potential landmine for Paniro Johnson

11th seed at 133 Connor MacGonagle also scratched.
Sam now has a familiar opponent in Taylor Lamont first round. Opportunity for payback.

Watching PSU -OSU.
No real surprises, but I liked what OSU was doing on bottom (particularly Ethan Smith against Starocci). Getting quickly to the sit out position seemed to be working well for him in getting fairly quickly away from a guy that is very tough on top. Unfortunately he was giving up too many takedowns.
