Fredrick Johnson verbally committed to Virginia Tech back in September, days after visiting Blacksburg for the first time. The 6'7", 300-pound senior, an offensive tackle prospect out of Royal Palm Beach (FL), has now decided to back off of that commitment and is reopening his recruitment.

Scout.com was the first to report Johnson's de-commitment.

In addition to Tech, Johnson has received scholarship offers from Florida, Marshall, and Nebraska. What specifically is next for him in terms of visits is unclear, though it appears he will visit some more schools before making his final college choice.

Johnson's decision means Virginia Tech now has three high school senior offensive line commitments, including 4-star tackle Austin Clark, Mike Arnold, and DAndre Plantin. The Hokies flipped Clark from South Carolna earlier this month.

McGirt Commits To Wolfpack

Johnson's de-commitment wasn't the only disappointing news on the offensive line recruiting front for Virginia Tech. Hillside (Durham, N.C.) senior offensive lineman Emanuel McGirt, who took an official visit to Virginia Tech the weekend of the Boston College game, verbally committed to NC State today. This isn't really surprising news, but it is another offensive line prospect off the board.

Now For Some Good News...

Hokies class of 2014 recruit Tyrell Smith wanted to enroll at Tech this past summer. After being denied admission, the former Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.) standout ended up at Cushing Academy in Massachusetts for postgraduate work this fall. Last week, the 6'4", 265-pound prospect learned that he has gained admission for the spring semester at Virginia Tech.

Smith will enroll in January of 2015.
