The following injury report was released by Virginia Tech on Thursday afternoon.
Virginia Tech starting tight end Ryan Malleck will miss the 2013 season after suffering a labral tear in his left shoulder on Aug. 20 in practice. The junior will use this year as his redshirt season.
The Tech medical staff will decide a course of action for surgery in the coming week.
Per ACC guidelines, Virginia Tech has released its Thursday injury report for Saturday’s game against Alabama in Blacksburg.

TSL's Take: The loss of Ryan Malleck is a huge blow. None of Tech's backup tight ends have ever caught a pass in a college game. Malleck was the clear frontrunner at the tight end position, and was poised to be one of Virginia Tech's most reliable receivers this season.
