Oklahoma scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Virginia Tech 10-4 and win the Blacksburg Regional on Sunday evening. The Hokies finished the season with a 40-22 record.
Tech trailed just 4-3 heading into the ninth, but two errors in the top frame of that inning helped the Sooners push across six late runs. Hokie starter Eddie Campbell went 5.2 innings and allowed five hits and four runs. However, only two of his runs were earned, and he did a good job keeping his team in the game for the second consecutive week.
The Hokies led this game 2-0 after five innings. Ryan Burns knocked in Chad Morgan in the second inning, and Andrew Rash hit an opposite field solo homer in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead.
Oklahoma finally got to Eddie Campbell in the sixth inning, plating four runs in that frame. However, two Tech errors in the inning created much of the damage. The Hokies came back to cut the lead to 4-3 heading into the ninth, but that's when the wheels came off defensively.
Tech did manage to tack on a run in the bottom of the ninth, and had the bases loaded with two outs, but Tyler Horan flew out to end the game.
Overall, it was a very good season for Virginia Tech baseball. Out of 296 Division I teams, the Hokies were one of the final 32 remaining. Tech will have to replace most of the middle of their lineup, as well as two of their three starting pitchers, before next season begins.
