Virginia Tech Stands Out in Des Moines

The track & field programs produced two National Champions in Des Moines
at the national meets, and the men's team came in 5th in the country, their
highest finish ever. The women's team finished 20th nationally. Both the men's
and women's teams won the National Championship in the hammer throw.

Alexander Zeigler brought home the men's National Championship, while Dorotea
Habazin won the National Championship for the women's team.

Here's a look at all of Tech's All-Americans. 1st place through 8th place are
considered First Team All-Americans, while the others are on the 2nd Team.

As you can see, the Hokies dominated the Hammer Throw competition. Marcel
Lomnicky, who won the National Championship in 2009, lost out to his teammate
this year. Ziegler's win is the fourth Hammer Throw National Championship for
the men's team in school history, and third since Spyridon Jullien won it in
2006.

The men's team is dominant in throwing, jumping and vaulting, but as you can
see they need more runners before they can advance to the point of winning the
National Championship as a team. Overall, they finished in 5th place out of 64
teams. The women's team finished 20th nationally out of 66 teams scored at the
event.

David Wilson finished in sixth place in the Triple Jump, despite being 10-20
pounds heavier than your average triple jumper. This fall, Wilson will attempt
to be a two-sport All-American as Virginia Tech's starting tailback.
