The Associated Press preseason football poll was released Saturday morning,
and Virginia Tech is ranked #7, the same ranking the Hokies received in the
coaches' poll. The ranking matches Virginia Tech's highest-ever preseason AP
ranking. VT also achieved a #7 ranking prior to the 2005 season.
The top seven in the AP poll are identical to the top seven in the USA
Today Coaches' Poll, which was released two weeks ago. Here is
the complete poll. ACC teams are highlighted in blue and white, and VT opponents
are highlighted in gray and black.

As in the AP Poll, three other ACC teams are ranked -- Georgia Tech, Florida
State, and North Carolina -- and out of conference opponents Alabama and
Nebraska are ranked.
In the "Others Receiving Votes" category, ACC teams Clemson (#34
with 42 points), Miami (#35 with 40 points), North Carolina State (#39 with 10
points), and Boston College (#40 with 9 points) appear, as does East Carolina
(#36 with 30 points). The ACC teams not receiving votes from the AP are
Maryland, Wake Forest, Virginia, and Duke.
Teams ranked by conference: SEC (5), Big 12 (5), ACC (4), Big Ten (3), PAC 10
(3), Mountain West (3), WAC (1), and independent Notre Dame. As with the
Coaches' Poll, no Big East teams are ranked in the preseason. The BE's
highest vote-getter is #28 Pittsburgh.
