Five Hokies Named to 2008 All-ACC Football Teams

The ACC released the 2008 All-Conference teams on Monday, and several Hokies
made the cut. Tech only had one first team All-ACC player, but several others
made second team or honorable mention.

First, here's a look at the All-ACC offense.

The Hokies didn't place anyone on the first team list, but r-freshman tailback
Darren Evans and junior right guard Sergio Render did make the second team.
Evans had a very good freshman season, finishing third in the ACC at 83.2 yards
per game. He rushed for 253 yards in Tech's nationally televised Thursday night
win over Maryland, setting a single-game school record.

Evans also set the Virginia Tech freshman rushing record. Kevin Jones ran for
957 yards in 2001, but Evans topped that with 998 yards so far this year. With
two games remaining, he has a chance to have a huge season.

Render started every game at right guard and had an up and down season.
However, there aren't many quality offensive linemen in the ACC right now, so he
got the second team recognition.

As usual, Tech has players on the defensive team as well.

Macho Harris was Tech's only first team defensive player. The senior cornerback
finished in a tie for second place in the ACC with six interceptions, trailing
only UNC's Trimane Goddard and GT's Morgan Burnett. Harris returned two of his
interceptions for touchdowns. Harris now has 15 career interceptions, which
ranks third on Tech's all-time list. With one more pick, he would tie Tyronne
Drakeford. With three more, he would tie Gene Bunn for first on the all-time
list.

Virginia Tech probably has the best combination of defensive ends in the
conference, and both Orion Martin and Jason Worilds were honored as members of
the second team All-ACC defense. Worilds finished the regular season with 58
tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks. Martin had 50 tackles, 13
tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks. Worilds finished second in the ACC in tackles
for loss and fourth in sacks, while Martin was seventh in tackles for loss and
third in sacks.

Though no Tech specialists made the All-ACC first or second teams, here is a
list of the players who did.

Several other Tech players were named Honorable Mention All-ACC. Here is a list

All three of Virginia Tech's interior offensive linemen, Sergio Render, Ryan
Shuman and Nick Marshman, made at least the Honorable Mention list. They'll have
their work cut out for them on Saturday. The BC defense features first team
defensive tackle B.J. Raji, first team linebacker Mark Herzlich and second team
defensive tackle Ron Brace.
