Virginia Tech and James Franklin added a commitment from Tyson Washington on Sunday evening.
The 6-foot-4, 205-pound athlete chose the Hokies over the likes of Clemson, Penn State, Syracuse, Virginia and Wake Forest — all schools he officially visited in May and June.
Tech got the last laugh, though, hosting Washington on campus the weekend of June 20 and securing his pledge soon after. Defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Brent Pry and running backs coach Norval McKenzie were his lead recruiters.
He held other Power Four offers from Maryland, Michigan State, NC State, Rutgers and West Virginia.
Washington played both ways at The St. James Academy last season under defensive coordinator Jeffrey Overton Sr., the father of Hokies running back Jeffrey Overton Jr, lining up at wide receiver and linebacker.
Defensively, he was mostly in an apex role in a spot between the offensive tackle and the slot receiver. That translates to an outside linebacker or nickel in Tech's scheme, though safety could also be in the cards.
Washington is a three-star prospect by both On3 and 247Sports. The 247Sports composite rankings list him as the No. 893 player in the class.
