Virginia Tech men's basketball and West Virginia announced the beginning of a three-year series on Thursday afternoon.
The Hokies and Mountaineers have not met since 2015, the culmination of a four-game series that began in 2012. Now, they'll play each of the next three seasons:
- Dec. 5, 2026: Morgantown, W.Va.
- TBD, 2027: Blacksburg, Va.
- TBD, 2028: Charleston, W.Va.
The Dec. 5 clash in Hope Coliseum will mark the 80th all-time meeting in the series, which WVU leads 49-30. Tech is 17-13 at home, 10-27 on the road and 3-9 at neutral venues.
The Hokies last visited Morgantown on Dec. 30, 2014, an 82-51 win for the Mountaineers. West Virginia trekked to Blacksburg the year after and won 88-63.
The last neutral-site game between Tech and WVU was Nov. 27, 1993, in USAir Arena in Landover, Md., the former home of the Washington Capitals and then-Washington Bullets. The Hokies won 63-58 behind a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double from current assistant Ace Custis.
The 2028 meeting will be the fifth in Charleston and the first since 1980. They played there four times between 1968 and 1980:
- Dec. 7, 1968: WVU, 81-70
- Feb. 4, 1970: VT, 76-75
- Feb. 17, 1971: WVU, 93-82
- Dec. 13, 1980: VT, 70-64
The Mountaineers are coming off a 21-14 (9-9 Big 12) season under first-year head coach Ross Hodge, which culminated in winning the College Basketball Crown in Las Vegas after victories over Stanford, Creighton and Oklahoma.
Virginia Tech forward Amani Hansberry and associate head coach Chester Frazier were both previously at West Virginia before joining the Hokies ahead of the 2025-26 season. Hansberry averaged 9.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game for WVU in 2024-25.
As for the Hokies' 2026-27 non-conference slate, they now have 11 games on the docket, including a neutral-site contest with Iowa in Sioux City (Nov. 10) and the Charleston Classic (Nov. 20-22). Of the seven games at home, the SEC/ACC Challenge vs. Ole Miss (Dec. 1) is the highlight.
