Virginia Tech and Maryland are shortening their football series. ESPN's Pete Thamel first reported the news on Friday morning.
Originally a four-game set created in 2017, it was scheduled to bring the Terrapins to Blacksburg in 2027 and 2029, with the Hokies visiting College Park in 2026 and 2028. The two games in the middle — 2027 and 2028 — have been dropped. Maryland added Baylor to replace Tech for those two games.
The Hokies will still visit the Terps this year in Week 3 on Saturday, Sept. 19, a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff on FOX or FS1. The 2029 game remains on the schedule with a date of Sept. 15.
The former ACC and Southern Conference counterparts have met 32 times previously, with the last regular-season clash coming in 2013 before Maryland dipped for the Big Ten. Tech's last visit to SECU Stadium — formerly Byrd Stadium — was in 2009.
As for the Hokies' future schedule, they still have Notre Dame and Liberty on the docket for the next two years. Here's the outlook:
- 2027: Sept. 4 vs. Liberty, Nov. 6 at Notre Dame
- 2028: Sept. 2 vs. Liberty, Nov. 4 vs. Notre Dame
- 2029: Sept. 8 at Arizona, Sept. 15 vs. Maryland
Last September, the ACC implemented a regular-season scheduling format that includes nine conference games and a minimum of 10 games each year against Power Four opponents.
