Virginia Tech and James Franklin added a commitment from Braxton Salster in the 2027 class on Friday afternoon.

A high school quarterback from Jacksonville, Ala., Salster projects as a tight end in college. He committed to the Hokies shortly after visiting for the spring game last weekend. His main recruiters at Tech were offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Ty Howle and assistant tight ends coach David Rocco.
An all-state selection as both a quarterback and an athlete at Pleasant Valley High School, he accounted for 43 touchdowns — and threw for 2,542 yards as a junior in 2025.
Salster is a three-star prospect, per 247Sports — the only recruiting outlet to give him a ranking. It lists him as the No. 19 player in the state of Alabama in the 2027 class and the No. 30 overall athlete.
He held other Power Four offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Duke, Illinois, Ole Miss and Wake Forest. The Hokies were his first P4 offer.
He joins a stacked tight end room that features graduating seniors Benji Gosnell and Harrison Saint Germain, redshirt junior Ja'Ricous Hairston, Penn State transfers Luke Reynolds and Matt Henderson, along with true freshman Pierce Petersohn.
Salster is the sixth commit in Tech's 2027 class and the second on the offensive side of the ball, joining running back Kelvin Morrison.
