The transfer portal officially opened this week — on Monday in women's basketball, Tuesday for men's basketball — and a few more Virginia Tech players have entered their names.
For Hokies men's basketball, Antonio Dorn and Brett Freeman are departing. Meanwhile, the women are losing Špela Brecelj.
Dorn's decision was first reported by 247Sports. The 7-foot, 230-pound center spent one season in Blacksburg and played in 24 games with five starts, averaging 2.6 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. He'll have two years left.
The Hamburg, Germany, native was signed by the Hokies over the summer as one of two European imports, along with Neoklis Avdalas of Greece. He posted a season-high eight points at South Carolina in December and capped off the season with a season-high seven rebounds in the ACC Tournament loss to Wake Forest.
However, Dorn missed eight games throughout the year. His absence in the season opener was due to the NCAA eligibility rule, which also stated he had three total years instead of the usual four due to his experience playing professionally in Germany. The other seven games he missed were due to a nagging back injury in December and January.
Freeman, a 6-foot-5, 180-pound guard who starred at Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte, N.C., did not play this year as a true freshman and redshirted. He's from the Bronx, N.Y. Both On3 and Verbal Commits reported his entry into the portal. He'll have four years of eligibility.
Dorn and Freeman are the fifth and sixth Hokies players to enter the transfer portal, joining Izaiah Pasha, Neoklis Avdalas, Christian Gurdak and Jaden Schutt.
On the women's side, Brecelj is in the portal after one season in Blacksburg. On3's Talia Goodman was the first to report the news, which Tech Sideline confirmed with Virginia Tech.
She was a late addition to the Hokies' roster in August from Ajdovščina, Slovenia, who brought versatility as a guard and forward at 6-foot-2. However, she only played in eight games and scored just seven points, four of which came in the blowout win over Presbyterian on Dec. 10.
She's the fifth Tech player to depart this offseason, joining Kayl Petersen, Sophie Swanson, Mackenzie Nelson and Carys Baker.
There's positive news on both fronts, though.
Virginia Tech men's basketball announced the return of forward Amani Hansberry, an All-ACC performer this year at 14.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, and guard Tyler Johnson. They're currently expected to have five scholarship players for next season, including Ben Hammond, who has yet to declare he's returning.
Meanwhile, Megan Duffy & Co. announced the return of All-ACC guard Carleigh Wenzel, guard Samyha Suffren, guard Kate Sears and the freshman forward duo of Amani Jenkins and Aniya Trent. They also picked up a commitment from Tennessee forward Alyssa Latham. They're at nine scholarship players for next season.
