Virginia Tech guard Sophie Swanson will enter the transfer portal when it opens on April 6. On3's Talia Goodman first reported the news. She will have one year of eligibility remaining.
The 5-foot-10 guard is the Hokies' second departure of the offseason, joining Kayl Petersen. She will have one year of eligibility remaining.
The Barrington, Ill., native transferred to Tech last year after spending two seasons at Purdue. She appeared in 21 games for the Hokies, playing just 150 minutes while averaging 2.3 points per game. She scored four-plus points on eight occasions, including in the NCAA Tournament loss to Oregon where she knocked down a three.
Primarily a 3-point shooter, Swanson was just 7-for-37 (18.9%) this year. She was one of three portal additions last year, along with Kilah Freelon and Mel Daley, but was the least impactful of the bunch and never seemed to settle in.
After playing 21 minutes in a blowout win over Presbyterian on Dec. 10, she was only on the floor for double-digit minutes twice the rest of the season — in double-digit defeats to Louisville and NC State.
Swanson was a solid prospect out of high school and was 2022 Miss Illinois Basketball, but dealt with injuries before college and then at Purdue, and things never quite clicked in Blacksburg. Here are her three-year stats:
• Fr. at Purdue: 27 games, 7.1 ppg, 39.4% 3FG (41-for-104)
• So. at Purdue: 28 games, 8.9 ppg, 30.1% 3FG (44-for-146)
• Jr. at VT: 21 games, 2.3 ppg, 18.9% 3FG (7-for-37)
Her departure leaves the Hokies with 12 current scholarship players for the 2026-27 season.
