Virginia Tech men's basketball center Christian Gurdak plans to enter the transfer portal when it opens on April 7. Travis Branham of 247Sports first reported the news. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Gurdak (6-10, 260) is the third Hokies player to put his name in the portal this offseason after a disappointing 19-13 (8-10 ACC) season, where they missed the NCAA Tournament and declined to participate in the NIT. Guards Izaiah Pasha and Neoklis Avdalas entered over the last week.
The Charles Town, W.Va., native averaged 5.6 points and 4.4 rebounds per game as a true freshman this year. He played in 31 games with 10 starts, mostly when Tech dealt with injuries. Those starts led to some of his best performances, including a 17-point, 19-rebound double-double in the Hokies' triple-overtime victory over Virginia on New Year's Eve.
That was one of Gurdak's seven double-figure outings, along with 17 points against Elon. He was a key rotation piece, especially during ACC play, where he posted 12 points against Cal, 11 against Georgia Tech and 10 against Wake Forest.
He goes way back with head coach Mike Young, who gave him his first Division I offer as a ninth grader â the youngest recruit Young ever offered. Gurdak began his high school career at Paul VI, where he was teammates with Ben Hammond, before transferring to Gonzaga. He emerged as a four-star prospect and the No. 117 recruit in the 2025 class, according to 247Sports.
With Tobi Lawal departing, Gurdak looked poised to have a bigger role as a sophomore, but he will likely do so elsewhere now.
His departure leaves the Hokies with eight current scholarship players for the 2026-27 season, including Amani Hansberry and Antonio Dorn in the frontcourt.
