ELON, N.C. — Rachel Castine and Zoe Yaeger each drove in four runs and Sophie Kleiman pitched three innings of no-hit ball as No. 11 Virginia Tech run-ruled Elon 14-2 on Wednesday at Hunt Softball Park.
The win extended the Hokies’ winning streak to 15 games and moved their season record to 22-2. It was their seventh run-rule win of the season.
“We played well tonight, Tech head coach Pete D’Amour told Tech Sideline after the game. “I like how we controlled the strike zone offensively and had better at-bats as the game went on. Our pitchers moved the ball around and kept their offense in check.”
The Hokies wasted no time getting on the board, scoring two runs in the first inning. Both Jordan Lynch and Nora Abromavage drew walks from Elon starter Chana Wolfe, and Michelle Chatfield reached on a bloop single to center field. Yaeger drove in Lynch with a fielder’s choice, and Addison Foster’s sacrifice fly plated Abromavage.
Tech extended its lead to 6-0 in the third. Abromavage led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a Chatfield walk. Yaeger recorded her second RBI of the night when her single to center scored Abromavage. Aldridge’s sacrifice fly scored Chatfield, and Gaby Mizelle singled in Yaeger. Castine notched her first RBI of the night when her double scored Mizelle.
A Yaeger double in the fourth plated Lynch, moving the margin to 7-0.
Hokie freshman Addyson Fisher got her first start of the season and threw three scoreless innings before running into trouble in the fourth. Two walks and a double got Elon on the board, and D’Amour decided to bring in Kleiman.
After a wild pitch netted Elon another run, the senior shut the door by not yielding a hit while striking out four in the three innings she pitched. She got credit for the win, taking her record to 5-1 on the season. Kleiman is one of four VT pitchers who have five wins this year.
The Hokies put the game into run-rule territory in the sixth, chalking up seven more runs. Walks to Annika Rohs and Abromavage sandwiched around a Lynch double loaded the bases. It was a team-leading ninth double of the year for Lynch.
Chatfield drew another walk to score Rohs, and Yaeger got her fourth RBI of the night with a groundout that scored Lynch. Foster’s second sacrifice fly of the game drove in Abromavage.
Foster’s two sacrifice flies tied an individual record set by Jayme Bailey at Syracuse in 2021 and Charisse Mariconda at Georgia Tech in 2007.
Up 10-2, Mizelle got her second RBI of the night with a single that scored Chatfield, and then Castine blasted a three-run homer to left, her seventh of the year and fourth in the last four games.

“I’m just glad I’m helping the team out,” Castine said afterwards. “I feel like everyone is on fire right now; mine just happened to go over the fence.”
“Rachel is seeing the ball really well right now,” D’Amour noted. “She’s another offensive threat for us and [is] making our offense even deeper. She’s playing great defense, too.”
The game was Tech’s first midweek of the season, and D’Amour was pleased with what he saw. The Hokies recorded 10 base hits and drew seven walks and a hit by pitch, resulting in a .546 on-base percentage on the night. It was the 16th time this season that the Hokies recorded double-digit hits in a game.
“It’s always interesting to see how we go about the first single game midweek of the year,” D’Amour said. “At times, our intensity was a little lower than usual, but we regrouped. We always have to play to the standards that we’ve set for ourselves.”
The Hokies will stay in North Carolina, traveling to Duke for their first ACC series of the year, which begins on Friday at 6 p.m. ET (ACCNX). Saturday and Sunday’s games will be televised on the ACC Network.
