Hokies women's basketball's Carleigh Wenzel and Carys Baker both earned Second Team All-ACC honors, the conference announced on Tuesday.
The league split voting between the Blue Ribbon Panel and coaches this year, meaning there were two separate lists. Wenzel appeared on both all-conference teams, while Baker was just on the coaches' second team.
The tandem averaged similar numbers this season as they led Virginia Tech to a 22-8 (12-6 ACC) record in Megan Duffy's second season at the helm. Wenzel averaged 14.9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game while Baker averaged 14.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
"I'm thrilled with the way Carys and Carleigh have both come along," Tech head coach Megan Duffy said on Monday. "We've documented [that] last year was about them filling into these new roles and playing bigger minutes and understanding what it meant to be a go-to player, and just to see their growth from last year to this year on that has been tremendous. They do it in different ways. Both very capable scorers. They both stepped up in big games, too, which has been tremendous."
Some of their best performances of the year came at the same time, including on Jan. 22 in the 71-68 come-from-behind victory over Clemson. They each scored 24 points and combined to shoot 15-for-31 (48.4%) while grabbing 11 rebounds.
They each had their individual moments, too. One of Wenzel's was on Sunday in the 83-82 win at Virginia, where she dropped a career-high 29 points and was 9-for-10 from the foul line, which included the game-winning free throws with 1.7 seconds remaining to seal the Commonwealth Clash sweep.
"Carleigh's done it with getting to the free-throw line, having a really balanced attack between her three and getting downhill into the paint," Duffy said.
One of Baker's best games of the season came at Stanford on Feb. 12, where she was 10-for-15 from the floor and 4-for-7 from 3-point range en route to 24 points. She also added seven boards.
"Carys has done it a little bit more with her scoring and rebounding," Duffy said. "Stretching the floor for us from 3-point land."
Wenzel, Baker and the Hokies are back in action this week in the ACC Tournament in Duluth, Ga., where they're the No. 6 seed. They will face either No. 11 seed Georgia Tech or No. 14 seed Florida State on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. ET on the ACC Network.
