Virginia Tech further pruned its future non-conference football schedules Monday, announcing the cancellation of games against Liberty in 2029 and 2030. The move comes as the Hokies adjust future non-league slates now that the ACC has moved to a nine-game conference schedule.
The 2029 Liberty game would have been the season opener in Blacksburg, with a return trip to Lynchburg in 2030. The schools agreed to the cancellation mutually, so neither side will owe the other a $500,000 buyout, per the contract.
The Hokies and Flames still have two matchups on the books, both in Blacksburg and both currently set as season openers — in 2027 (Sept. 4) and 2028 (Sept. 2).
The cancellations open up a slot in the 2029 slate, with Tech having non-conference games remaining at Arizona and at home against Maryland. The 2030 schedule features three non-conference games: vs. Arizona, at BYU and vs. Old Dominion.
It’s the latest reshuffling as all the power leagues move to nine-game conference schedules. Tech canceled a game with James Madison this fall to get down to three non-conference opponents, keeping VMI, Old Dominion and Maryland.
Though never formally announced, in December the Hokies also canceled a home-and-home series with South Carolina in 2034 and 2035.
