The No. 20 Hokies got off to a good start in the Georgia Classic on Friday, recording wins over Seton Hall (7-2) and Utah State (10-3) to improve to 9-2 on the year.

Virginia Tech head coach Pete D’Amour was understandably pleased with his team’s performance.

“From an offense perspective, it was our best overall day of the season,” D’Amour told Tech Sideline. “We faced a similar approach last weekend and we made a significant adjustment. We had a lot of hard hit outs, too.”

Game 1: Virginia Tech 7, Seton Hall 2

Jordan Lynch and Zoe Yaeger led an eight-hit attack against the Pirates, each driving in two runs.

Lynch got the scoring going in the second inning when she blasted a ball far over the right-field fence, her second dinger of the year.

Two Seton Hall miscues lead to a second Tech run in the third. Nora Abromavage drew a walk and attempted to steal second. However, the throw from Pirates catcher Lea Kosinski sailed wide, and a subsequent throw from second baseman Caroline Hobbes to third base was errant as well, enabling Abromavage to score.

In the fourth inning, another Pirate error and two walks loaded the bases, and Hokies took advantage. Kylie Aldridge drove in Lyla Blackwell with a sacrifice fly, and a Zoe Yaeger single plated Annika Rohs and Michelle Chatfield.

A two-out Lynch double and a Sara McNelly single brought home the final two Tech runs.

Sophie Kleiman (2-1) got the start in the circle and, after loading the bases in the first inning, shut down the Pirates. She threw four scoreless innings and scattered three hits, picking up her second win of the year.

Freshman Addyson Fisher pitched the final three frames, allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out three.

Game 2: Virginia Tech 10, Utah State 3

In the Hokies’ second game of the day, Utah State jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on a Grace Matej first-inning home run.

Aldridge cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning for Tech as she doubled home Chatfield. Then, Emma Mazzarone tied the game in the second with her second home run of the year. Soon after that, the Hokies broke the game open in the third and fourth innings.

After a Gaby Mizelle double put runners on second and third in the third inning, Rohs drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly. And after a pair of walks from Chatfield and Aldridge loaded the bases, Zoe Yaeger cleared them with a three-RBI double.

In the fourth inning, Mizelle drove in two more runs with a triple, and pinch-hitter Haley Luginbill brought Mizelle in with a double to right field.

Avery Layton picked up her second win of the season in the circle, allowing three runs in 4 ⅓ innings while striking out four. Bree Carrico relieved her in the fifth and threw 2 ⅔ scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out two.

The Virginia Tech defense was a mixed bag on the day, committing one error in the first game and three in the second. However, it tied a school record against Utah State with three double plays.

“Our defense will be fine,” D’Amour said. “We have too much talent, with kids that have been stellar with the glove in the past, to read too much into it this early in the season.”

The Hokies will continue their adventures in Athens on Saturday with a rematch with Seton Hall at 10:30 a.m. ET and a showdown with No. 12 Georgia at 3:30 p.m. ET, which will be televised on SEC Network Plus.
