Virginia Tech and James Franklin added to their quarterback room with the commitment of North Carolina's Bryce Baker on Saturday. He announced the commitment on his Instagram page.
The Kernersville, N.C., native did not see the field as a true freshman in Chapel Hill and redshirted. When the transfer portal opened, he visited the Hokies and committed shortly after.
Baker starred at East Forsyth High School, where he was a unanimous four-star recruit. On3 and Rivals listed him as a top-100 prospect — No. 65 and No. 78, respectively — and three outlets had him as a top-10 quarterback, including ESPN at No. 5.
He was a consensus top-five recruit in the Tar Heel State, too. Tech pursued him, as did Danny O'Brien, then the quarterbacks coach at Penn State who is now in Blacksburg. Boston College, Duke, Florida, Louisville, Maryland, NC State and Wake Forest also offered.
Baker attended the Elite 11 finals and the Manning Passing Academy after leading East Forsyth to a 23-3 record and two conference championships. In his final two years of high school, he completed 439 of his 622 passes (70.6%) for 6,605 yards and 79 touchdowns while adding nine scores and 536 yards on the ground.
