Virginia Tech added to its special teams unit on Thursday night with the commitment of Marshall punter Nathan Totten, he announced on his Instagram story.
The Ashland, Ky., native was a Second Team All-Sun Belt pick this season after setting the Thundering Herd's single-season punting average record at 45.6 yards per attempt. He had a long of 63 and posted an average of 50-plus yards in three games.
Totten finished the year with 56 punts for 2,551 yards, with 19 boots of 50-plus and 20 downed inside the 20-yard line. Marshall ranked 10th in the country in punting efficiency, according to the FEI special teams ratings. Moreover, he posted a PFF punting grade of 71.5, which ranked 13th among Group of 5 punters. For comparison, Hokies punter Nick Veltsistas was at 79.9, tied for 15th in the FBS.
As a redshirt freshman in 2024, Totten played in nine games, primarily as a kickoff specialist. He had 40 kickoffs for 2,563 yards and 28 touchbacks. On top of that, he made four of his six field goal attempts with a long of 39 yards, all while going 8-for-8 on extra points.
Tech returns placekicker John Love, a two-time All-ACC honorable mention pick, as well as long snapper Christian Epling. It lost Veltsistas and kickoff specialist Kyle Lowe to graduation, however.
