Virginia Tech and James Franklin added to their tight end room on January 4 with a transfer portal commitment from Penn State's Matt Henderson.

The Powhatan, Va., native played 22 snaps on special teams while redshirting as a true freshman in 2025. He saw action against Indiana, Michigan State, Nebraska, Rutgers and in the Pinstripe Bowl vs. Clemson.
At Powhatan High School, Henderson reeled in 48 catches for 724 yards and eight touchdowns as a senior. That followed up a junior campaign where he had 74 receptions for 1,113 yards and 14 scores. He was also a four-year basketball player who eclipsed 1,000 career points.
As a prospect, he was rated as a four-star by three of the four services. On3 and Rivals listed him as a top-10 player in the Commonwealth of Virginia while ESPN and 247Sports had him at No. 14 and 15, respectively.
Ty Howle was his primary recruiter to Happy Valley, and with him becoming the offensive coordinator and tight ends coach on Franklin's new staff, it's a seamless move to Blacksburg for Henderson.
He's Tech's second portal pledge of the offseason, joining Penn State defensive end Daniel Jennings, who also committed on Sunday.
