Running back Jeremiah Coney is among three Hokies who on Tuesday confirmed their intention to enter the transfer portal when it opens on Friday.
Fellow running back Braydon Bennett, tight end Zeke Wimbush and cornerback Caleb Brown also plan to go into the portal, according to reports the players confirmed on social media.
Coney was a 2023 signee out of Hermitage High in Richmond who ran for 254 yards in his three years in Blacksburg but found few snaps after the Hokies bolstered the room through the transfer portal last year. His highlight was when he started in place of an injured Bhayshul Tuten in the 2024 game at Syracuse and ran for 96 yards on nine carries.
Bennett transferred to Virginia Tech from Coastal Carolina last winter and scored a touchdown in Week 4 against Wofford. An injury kept him out for the rest of the season. He can recoup the year as a medical redshirt to get what would be a seventh season of eligibility. The tailback ran for 781 yards and 11 touchdowns with Coastal Carolina in 2024.
The Hokies remain in good shape at running back, where leading rusher Marcellous Hawkins (749 yards) and promising freshman Jeffrey Overton Jr. have already announced their plan to return, with touted freshman Messiah Mickens having just signed earlier this month.
Wimbush originally planned to be a grayshirt with the Hokies out of Stone Bridge High in Ashburn but was on scholarship when he arrived in 2023. After redshirting that first year, he primarily saw action on special teams in the 24 games he played the last two seasons.
Brown transferred to Tech from Hawaii in the offseason and started the first two games of the year, recording two tackles. He also saw action vs. Old Dominion before an injury sidelined him for the rest of the season. He played in 23 games the previous two years with the Rainbow Warriors, finishing with 43 tackles and 13 pass breakups.
That brings Virginia Tech’s total outgoing transfers to seven since James Franklin was hired in November. Quarterbacks Pop Watson and Garret Rangel and receiver Cam Seldon previously confirmed their plans to move on. Click here for Tech Sideline’s roster management page.
