Virginia Tech and James Franklin officially flipped in-state linebacker Mathieu Lamah from Penn State on Monday.

Though he was committed to the Nittany Lions since May, Lamah visited Blacksburg for the Miami football game and committed to the Hokies soon after.

Tech originally pursued him in his recruitment, as did Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina and Rutgers, but he chose Penn State. He held other offers from Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan State, Minnesota, South Carolina, Syracuse, Virginia, Wake Forest, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Here’s a breakdown of where the recruiting services see Lamah:

  • Rivals: Four-star, No. 5 player in Virginia, No. 21 linebacker
  • ESPN: Three-star, No. 12 player in Virginia, No. 11 linebacker
  • 247Sports: Three-star, No. 21 player in Virginia, No. 69 linebacker

A true inside linebacker, he racked up 87 tackles as a junior in 2024, including six tackles for loss. He’s the first player from Patriot High School to commit to the Hokies since Jalen Stroman in the 2021 class.

Lamah is also the third linebacker in Tech’s last two recruiting classes, joining Noah Chambers and Brett Clatterbaugh.

He’s the seventh Hokies pledge since Franklin took over and the second on Monday, joining quarterback Troy Huhn.
