Linebacker Caleb Woodson and safety Quentin Reddish are among the players listed as out on the initial availability report that the Hokies submitted to the ACC on Thursday night.
It's the second straight game both defensive starters will miss, adding to speculation about what their future will be with Virginia Tech in the wake of Brent Pry's firing. Neither player has redshirted in his career, with both having appeared in three games this season, one under the threshold.
Cornerback Caleb Brown and safety Sherrod Covil are both listed as out as well.
The Hokies had more encouraging news, at least relative to past availability, on the offensive line, where Johnny Garrett, Layth Ghannam and Jaden Muskrat are listed as questionable.
Garrett, the starting left tackle, has not played since injuring his knee against Vanderbilt earlier this month. Ghannam, a left guard, appeared on special teams snaps last week but didn't get a rep with the offense. Muskrat, who arrived from Auburn as one of the team's top backup options, has not played yet this year.
Receiver Takye Heath, a starter in the slot in the opener against South Carolina, is listed as probable.
