Virginia Tech football’s 2031 game against Wisconsin has been moved to Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C., and is part of the Duke’s Mayo Kickoff, as announced on Wednesday.
“In today’s ever-changing landscape of college football, opportunities like the Duke’s Mayo Classic allow us to maximize exposure, drive viewership and generate revenue that directly supports our student-athletes,” Virginia Tech athletics director Whit Babcock said in the release. “Playing in Charlotte positions Virginia Tech to take advantage of the evolving environment of the sport while showcasing our program on a national stage.”
The contest was originally slated for Sept. 12, 2031, in Blacksburg but has been moved up to Week 1. The return trip to Madison is still scheduled for Sept. 18, 2032.
The originally scheduled game in Lane Stadium will be replaced by an additional home game that season.
The Hokies and Badgers have never met on the gridiron but have been scheduled to play since the early 2000s. Originally a home-and-home in 2008-09, this is the fifth time the series has been adjusted.

Tech has played in Charlotte three times in the last decade, all in bowl games. It had an unbelievable comeback to beat Arkansas in the 2016 Belk Bowl but lost to Kentucky in the 2019 edition. In last season’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl, Minnesota beat the Hokies 24-10.
