Virginia Tech cornerback Dante Lovett has decided to enter the transfer portal, taking advantage of an NCAA rule that allows for a 30-day window during which players can enter the portal if their head coach is fired. Lovett can use this season as a redshirt and will be a redshirt junior at his new program next season.

Pete Nakos of On3Sports was the first to report the news.

Lovett was projected to start this season and be a major part of the Virginia Tech secondary. However, his performances haven’t been great, and his playing time has dwindled as the season has progressed. After playing 31 snaps against South Carolina, he was on the field for only 20 plays against Vanderbilt and just 12 on Saturday night against Old Dominion.

Lovett is the first Virginia Tech player to take advantage of this rule, but he certainly won’t be the last.
