The ACC unveiled the opponents for its men's basketball programs on Wednesday afternoon, including Virginia Tech.
The announcement comes three weeks after the 18-member conference announced its shift from a 20-game schedule to an 18-game slate for men's basketball, similar to what the league's women's basketball programs do. It used a 20-game schedule since the 2019-20 season after having an 18-game slate from 2012-13 through 2018-19.
As a result, every school will have a primary partner it plays twice a year, like Duke and North Carolina. It'll then have a variable partner it plays twice a season. That team will rotate each year. Of the other 15 programs, it'll play 14 of them once a year, either home or away. There's one squad it won't see each regular season, which also rotates. In 2025-26 for the Hokies, that team is Pitt.
Here's how it shakes out for Virginia Tech and Mike Young:
- Home/away: Virginia, Wake Forest
- Home: Boston College, Cal, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Stanford
- Away: Clemson, Louisville, Miami, North Carolina, NC State, SMU, Syracuse
Notable:
With the exception of Clemson, Miami, Pitt and Wake Forest, every team the Hokies played at home in 2024-25, they'll play on the road in 2025-26, and vice versa. They hosted North Carolina last year but will go to Chapel Hill this season, and they've got the California schools at home after traveling out there in January.
On paper, Tech's travel is easier this year. It doesn't have to go to Chestnut Hill, the West Coast, Tallahassee, Atlanta or Indiana. Its tradeoff is Louisville, Dallas, Syracuse and three trips to North Carolina — Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Winston-Salem. It also has to go to Clemson and Miami — two programs it saw twice each last season.
