The 6-foot-3, 312-pound lineman is a five-year college veteran who brings versatility to the Hokies. He started his career at Tulsa and played three years for head coach Philip Montgomery — now Tech's offensive coordinator — before transferring to Auburn and spending two seasons, where he reunited with Montgomery in 2023.
Muskrat brings 1,338 career offensive snaps to Blacksburg, according to PFF. After playing in four contests (204 snaps) and redshirting in 2020, he only saw 39 snaps in 2021 due to injury. However, he worked his way up and became a starter at Tulsa in 2022, when he played 848 snaps.
He was primarily a backup at Auburn, seeing 220 offensive snaps in 2023 and just 27 in 2024. He appeared in every game over those two years on special teams, though (118 snaps).
Muskrat provides the Hokies with some versatility on the offensive line. While he's mainly lined up at right tackle (1,236 snaps), he's also played 49 snaps at left tackle and 45 at left guard.
His PFF grades were a mixed bag:
2024 (27 snaps at Auburn): 81.6 overall, 76.2 pass block, 79.2 run block
2023 (220 snaps at Auburn): 62.9 overall, 50.0 pass block, 65.0 run block
2022 (848 snaps at Tulsa): 61.2 overall, 61.8 pass block, 61.3 run block
2021 (39 snaps at Tulsa): 60.3 overall, 33.7 pass block, 71.5 run block
2020 (204 snaps at Tulsa): 59.4 overall, 57.0 pass block, 58.3 run block
The Berryville, Okla., native played his high school ball at Bentonville West High School in Arkansas, where he was an all-state performer. Prior to that, he played on the defensive line at Choctaw High School in Oklahoma. He was originally a two-star prospect with no listed offers outside of the Golden Hurricanes, per 247Sports.
Muskrat is the 28th transfer portal commitment of the offseason for Tech and the ninth after spring practice. He's one of five new additions on the offensive line, though the previous four — Tomas Rimac, Kyle Altuner, Lucas Austin and Gavin Crawford — all followed Matt Moore from West Virginia.
He gives the Hokies 14 scholarship offensive linemen for the 2025 season. Tech only lost one player in the projected two-deep after spring practice in Bob Schick. Otherwise, it looked like this, per Andy Bitter back in April:
Starters: LT Johnny Garrett, LG Layth Ghannam, C Kyle Altuner, RG Brody Meadows, RT Tomas Rimac
Backups: LT Aidan Lynch, C Tommy Ricard, RG Montavious Cunningham, RT Lucas Austin
Expect Muskrat to factor into the two-deep in some regard, likely at tackle — which could potentially slide Rimac inside to guard.
