On Friday, Virginia Tech safety Braylon Johnson announced he's entering the transfer portal. He has three years of eligibility remaining.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder from Highland Springs played in 17 games over two seasons and recorded 11 tackles. PFF credits him with 112 career defensive snaps and 54 on special teams.

Johnson started his career at cornerback and, out of necessity, most of his action came as a true freshman. The Hokies lacked secondary depth, especially behind Dorian Strong, Mansoor Delane and Derrick Canteen at corner, so he played in 13 games and finished with seven tackles — three of which came at Boston College.

However, he split time at cornerback and safety last spring before making the move to safety during fall camp. Despite a season-ending injury to starter Jalen Stroman, Johnson struggled to find playing time, was ultimately passed by Quentin Reddish (Fr.) and Devin Alves (r-So.) and found himself out of the two-deep. He redshirted as a result.

Though Stroman, Mose Phillips and Jaylen Jones all departed, the writing appeared to be on the wall for the Richmond native this spring when the Hokies brought in four transfer safeties — Isaiah Cash, Sherrod Covil, Christian Ellis and Tyson Flowers — to complement Reddish. He was a third-string safety at the conclusion of spring practice, though he racked up three tackles and broke up a pass in the spring game.

Johnson was a three-star recruit out of Highland Springs High School who was a first-team all-region selection and a top-40 recruit in the Commonwealth. He was ranked as high as No. 15 by Rivals and as low as No. 36 by ESPN.

He's the son of Loren Johnson, the current head coach of the Springers who played for the Hokies from 1995-98. His younger brother, Brennan, is a true freshman linebacker that is enrolling this summer.
