Virginia Tech and Megan Duffy received a commitment from Purdue guard Sophie Swanson on Wednesday. She has two years of eligibility remaining.

Swanson is the first offseason pickup for the Hokies, who went 19-13 (9-9 ACC) this year. They lost five players — three to the transfer portal (Lani White, Myah Hazelton and Ramiya White) and two to graduation (Matilda Ekh and Rose Micheaux).
As a sophomore, the 5-foot-10 guard primarily came off the bench to average 8.9 points per game — the third-most on the Boilermakers (10-19, 3-15 Big Ten) — in 19.4 minutes per game.
Swanson started the first eight games of the year, which featured four double-digit outings, but found herself in a different role in the middle of the season. She chipped in here and there from Dec. 4 through Jan. 27 before finally hitting her stride again on Jan. 30 vs. Nebraska — an 11-point performance where she was 3-of-4 from behind the arc.
She finished the year strong from there, reaching double figures seven times in the final nine games. That was highlighted by a career-high 29 points — on 10-of-13 shooting, including a 5-of-6 mark from deep — in Purdue’s 92-85 road win at Penn State.
In all, the Barrington, Ill., native finished 44-of-146 (30.1%) from 3-point range this season — a dip from last year’s 39.4 percent clip (41-of-104). She led all freshmen in the country with 4.8 treys per 40 minutes last year.
The Barrington High School product was named 2022 Illinois Miss Basketball and the state player of the year as a junior behind 21.4 points and 5.2 boards per game. However, she suffered a knee injury as a senior, which required surgery and held her out for her first five collegiate games at Purdue.
She’s the second player to venture to Blacksburg from West Lafayette in the last four years, following in the footsteps of Kayana Traylor.
