Chester Frazier is returning to the Virginia Tech men's basketball program as the associate head coach, the school announced on Tuesday morning.
He fills the void left by Christian Webster, who was let go by Mike Young on March 21 after the Hokies' 13-19 (8-12 ACC) season.
"We are thrilled to welcome Chester, his wife, Sarah, and children, Chandler, Cameron and Courtney, back to Blacksburg," Young said in Tech's release. "His passion, energy and tireless work ethic are exactly what we need. Chester has a deep understanding of our program's culture, and his ability to connect with players, recruit at a high level and develop talent will be invaluable as we move forward.
"He has been a winner everywhere he has been. I am fortunate to call Chester a dear friend and am fired up to work alongside him once again."
It's Frazier's second stint on Young's staff at Tech. Back in 2019, he was one of the first hires Young made after he became the head coach and replaced Buzz Williams. Frazier originally joined the program as the associate head coach and came by way of Kansas State, where he spent seven seasons working with Bruce Weber and won two Big 12 titles and made five NCAA Tournament appearances. Young rounded out that first staff with Antwon Jackson and Webster.
Frazier spent two seasons with the Hokies — where he helped them to a third-place finish in the ACC and a trip to the Big Dance in 2021 — before moving on to Illinois, his alma mater. A two-time All-Big Ten Defensive Team honoree for the Fighting Illini from 2005-09 under Weber, he was part of three NCAA Tournament teams. He got his start in coaching there as a graduate assistant in 2010-11.
As an assistant under Brad Underwood, who called him "one of the brightest young stars in the coaching profession," Frazier guided the program to the NCAA Tournament three times in as many seasons, highlighted by a run to the Elite Eight in 2024. He then moved to West Virginia and spent one year on Darian DeVries' staff as the associate head coach — in which the Mountaineers went 19-13 (10-10 Big 12) — before DeVries left for Indiana, giving him the opportunity to return to Blacksburg.

I'm looking forward to once again working with Coach Young and the entire staff to help return this program back to where it belongs."
The Baltimore, Md., native is an excellent, well-connected recruiter and a very experienced and well-respected coach. Frazier, 38, joins Kevin Giltner and J.D. Byers on the Virginia Tech staff. It's possible one or two WVU players follow him to the Hokies, too.
