Hokies center Ryan Jones Jr. is entering the transfer portal, he confirmed on Instagram on Monday morning. After redshirting this season, he should have four years of eligibility remaining.
He's the fifth portal entry in the last week for Virginia Tech, joining center Patrick Wessler and guards Rodney Brown Jr., Jaydon Young and Brandon Rechsteiner.
Jones Jr. (6-8, 240) was a former four-star and top-70 recruit in the country who dealt with injury issues in his lone season in Blacksburg. He only played 11 minutes over five games. In the season opener vs. Delaware State, he was 2-of-2 for four points in two minutes.
A product of The Rock School in Gainesville, Fla., he close Tech over Florida in his initial college recruitment. He was the fifth-highest rated recruit in program history but never really found the floor.
After Tech's defeat to Cal in the ACC Tournament, head coach Mike Young said, "A lot was missing [this year]. … We've got to get more talented, and we're going to, quick. … I'm not living through that again." The recent attrition is just the start, and the transfer portal is officially open as of Monday, meaning the Hokies can start replenishing their roster — and Young has plenty of scholarships at his disposal.
There are currently four returning players from this season: Ben Hammond, Jaden Schutt, Tyler Johnson and Tobi Lawal. Tech also has two incoming freshmen.
