Virginia Tech picked up a commitment on Friday from four-star wide receiver Shamarius Peterkin (Winston-Salem, N.C.). He is the 16th member of the 2025 recruiting class and the fourth wideout. He is the third four-star receiver of the class, too.

Peterkin is ranked as high as No. 7 in the state of North Carolina and isn’t listed lower than No. 11 by any of the recruiting services. 247Sports has him as the No. 209 overall prospect in the country. He chose the Hokies over NC State and North Carolina, his two other finalists.

Lost in the euphoria of his commitment is the fact that Peterkin specifically said in his press conference that he is committing for both football and basketball. He doesn’t appear to be as highly-touted in basketball, and the fact that basketball season starts before football season ends will make it extremely difficult to play both sports. Nevertheless, it appears that Mike Young has given it the green light, which may have pushed it over the line in Tech’s favor, as he was considered a heavy NC State lean throughout the recruiting process.
With Peterkin joining the fold, two of Virginia Tech’s four wide receiver commits are verbals to two sports, with Micah Matthews committing to both Hokie football and baseball. Two-sport athletes are extremely rare in the modern college game, so it’s very likely that both guys will have to make a choice at some point, but it appears that they’ll both make that choice after enrolling in Blacksburg.
