Virginia Tech men’s basketball released its 2024-25 non-conference schedule Thursday morning. The Hokies will open the season on Monday, Nov. 4, vs. Delaware State in Cassell Coliseum.
All but two games — home contests vs. Delaware State (Nov. 4) and USC Upstate (Nov. 8) — were previously reported or announced. Here’s a full look at Tech’s slate:

It’ll be the second time in two years the Hokies have opened with Hornets, who played in the CBI last year.
On Friday, Nov. 8, Tech hosts USC Upstate for the first time since November 2019 — the second home game of the Mike Young era. That contest is the front end of a busy weekend for the Hokies, which also features a home football game vs. Clemson (Sat., Nov. 9) and a women’s basketball clash with Iowa in Charlotte (Sunday, Nov. 10).
Winthrop comes to town on Monday, Nov. 11, before Tech travels up to Baltimore, Md., for a Friday night clash with Penn State in CFG Bank Arena on Nov. 15. The Nittany Lions posted a 16-17 (9-11 Big Ten) record in Year 1 under Mike Rhoades, the former head man at VCU.
The Hokies host Jacksonville on Wednesday, Nov. 20, ahead of the Fort Myers Tip-Off in Fort Myers, Fla., the following week. It’ll mark their first meeting with the Dolphins since Dec. 20, 1986 — a game they forfeited due to an ineligible player (Russell Pierre). “But the loss of Pierre was only the tip of the iceberg for a Virginia Tech basketball program that was about to go through eleven months of hell,” Will Stewart said of the incident in The Year Of Our Discontent, Part 2.
Tech will meet Michigan in South Florida on Monday, Nov. 25. The Wolverines enter their first year under head coach Dusty May. The former Florida Atlantic coach crushed the Hokies in Orlando last season, though he has to flip a roster that finished 8-24 (3-17 Big Ten) in 2023-24. The Hokies will play South Carolina or Xavier in the second game on Wednesday, Nov. 27. (That’s a long week for Tech basketball in Fort Myers — the women’s team plays in the same tournament on Friday and Saturday.)
After that, Vanderbilt awaits the Hokies in the ACC/SEC Challenge in Blacksburg on Wednesday, Dec. 4. Former JMU head coach Mark Byington took the same position in Nashville in March, and the Commodores added former Tech players MJ Collins and Tyler Nickel in the transfer portal. That game might have some spice.
North Carolina A&T (Thursday, Dec. 12) and Navy (Sunday, Dec. 15) round out Tech’s home non-conference schedule, the latter of which is a semi-familiar foe. In 2021, the Hokies beat the Midshipmen 77-57 in the Veteran’s Classic in Annapolis. December will mark Navy’s second-ever trip to Blacksburg, and the first since Feb. 15, 1964.
Virginia Tech will play its final non-conference game just before Christmas in Philadelphia, Pa., at The Palestra against Saint Joseph’s. It’ll be the program’s second-ever game at the iconic venue and will be a homecoming for Tech guard Hysier Miller, a Philadelphia native who transferred from Temple in April.
