Virginia Tech picked up a big commitment on Wednesday in two sports. Micah Matthews of Turner Ashby (Bridgewater, Va.), a standout in both football and baseball, picked Brent Pry, John Szefc and the Hokies.
Matthews, who plays wide receiver in football, is ranked as high as No. 5 in Virginia by both 247Sports and ESPN. He’s the No. 112 overall prospect in the country, according to 247Sports, while ESPN has him at No. 154. Meanwhile, he’s also a top baseball prospect — Baseball America lists him at No. 54 while Draft Analyst ranks him at No. 43.
Perfect Game assigns Matthews with a 9.5 rating as a baseball prospect on a 1-10 scale. That’s right in the middle of two different ranking designations:
10: Potential very high draft pick and/or elite level college prospect.
9: Potential top-10 round pick and/or highest level college prospect.
In other words, Matthews is currently viewed between the level of a 10th-round pick (out of 20 rounds) and one of the top picks in the draft. It could certainly be fair to view Matthews as the most highly-decorated recruit in the history of the Virginia Tech baseball program. However, he’s not eligible to be drafted until July of 2025. Matthews picked the Hokies over North Carolina, UVa, BYU and Utah after visiting all four universities. He was originally committed to South Carolina for baseball. His other football offers included East Carolina, Kentucky, Maryland, NC State, Rutgers and West Virginia.
He is the 15th commitment of the 2025 football recruiting class and the 11th from the Commonwealth of Virginia. He’s also the third wide receiver of the class, joining Jayden Anderson (Virginia Beach) and Matthew Outten (Portsmouth).
