
On Monday, Kate Sears committed to Megan Duffy and Virginia Tech.

A 5-foot-9 point guard from Boone, N.C., Sears was a NCBCA First Team All-State pick as a junior in 2023-24 after averaging 30.6 points, 11 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game in the postseason. ESPN ranks her the No. 85 overall prospect in the class of 2025. A three-time conference player of the year at Watauga High School, she had a 38-point performance in the state semifinals.
Sears is the No. 2 overall prospect in the state, according to Prep Girls Hoops, who plays for Team Curry on the AAU circuit. She visited the Hokies in April after Duffy was hired and committed on Memorial Day. She held offers from Boston College, Clemson, James Madison, Kansas, Marquette, Michigan, Purdue and Wake Forest, among others.
Sears is the first class of 2025 pledge for the Hokies in the Duffy era. Virginia Tech currently has 11 scholarship players for the 2024-25 season. Here's the program's future scholarship breakdown:
