Virginia Tech and Megan Duffy picked up a commitment from Kayl Petersen Monday afternoon. A top-100 recruit in the 2024 class, per ESPN, she’s the second addition for the Hokies since Duffy was appointed on April 5, joining Leila Wells.

Like Wells, Petersen is a high school prospect who signed with Duffy’s Marquette program in the fall. She becomes the third member of the Tech’s 2024 recruiting class, joining Wells (5-9) and Myah Hazelton (6-4).
A 6-foot forward from Waupun, Wis., the No. 68 player in ESPN’s HoopGurlz 100 averaged 17.7 points, 12.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.3 blocks and 2.0 steals per game as a senior. She was a 1,000-point scorer, a state champion, a three-time East Central Conference Player of the Year and an all-state player at Waupun.
Petersen has a long-standing relationship with Duffy from her recruitment process at Marquette. An in-state talent who lives just over an hour north of Milwaukee, she committed to the Golden Eagles on a visit on Oct. 22, 2022, and officially signed her letter of intent on Nov. 8, 2023.
“We have watched Kayl win a high school state championship and solidify her place as one of the top players on the Nike EYBL circuit with Wisconsin Flight Elite,” Duffy said of Petersen when she signed with Marquette in November. “Her versatility and skill set continues to grow each year. … Fans will love her blue-collar work ethic, relentless rebounding and ability to score inside and out.”
Petersen was the fourth of five top-100 prospects from the Badger State in ESPN’s rankings, a group highlighted by UConn signee Allie Ziebell, the No. 7 player in the class.
She reported offers from Bradley, Green Bay, Minnesota, Toledo and Xavier.
Petersen’s addition gives the Hokies nine scholarship players for the 2024-25 season, meaning they currently have six open spots. Here’s a breakdown:
