Virginia Tech offensive lineman Hunter Mclain announced he's entering the transfer portal on Friday. He will join the Hokies in the Military Bowl vs. Tulane on Dec. 27 before leaving.

He's the seventh Hokies player to enter the portal this offseason and the second offensive lineman, joining Johnny Dickson. A Daleville, Va., native who played his high school ball at Lord Botetourt, Mclain (6-4, 293) did not play in his time in Blacksburg. He redshirted in 2022 and did not see action as a redshirt freshman this year. He has three years of eligibility remaining at his next stop.Mclain's commitment to Virginia Tech was unique â just a few weeks into his tenure and in the midst of signing his first recruiting class, head coach Brent Pry called Mclain and offered him a scholarship on early signing day in December 2021. Out of high school, his Power 5 offers consisted of Iowa State and Kentucky.
The Hokies have 17 scholarship offensive linemen for 2024 with Mclain's departure and sit at 88-89 total scholarships. Ron Crook's O-line group received a jolt on Thursday afternoon when Georgia State's Montavious Cunningham announced his commitment, Tech's first portal pickup of the offseason.
