After an 82-60 thumping of Florida State on Saturday afternoon in Blacksburg, Virginia Tech earned the No. 11 seed in the ACC tournament and will play No. 14 seed Notre Dame in the first round on Tuesday.
Similar to the 2022 tournament in Brooklyn, the Hokies (18-13, 8-12 ACC) play in the late time slot for the entire week, should they advance. They'll face the Fighting Irish (11-20, 3-17) in Greensboro at 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday night on the ACC Network.
Tech won the one meeting with Notre Dame in 2022-23, 93-87. It was a high-scoring contest in which both teams shot above 50%. ND hit 55% of its field goals while VT shot a 57% clip. Grant Basile and Nate Laszewski went toe-to-toe, scoring 33 points each.
"He’s even-keeled," associate head coach Mike Jones said of Basile after that victory. "He doesn’t get too high, doesn’t get too low. He missed a couple shots in the first half, but it didn’t deter him from taking a couple of open ones in the second half."
Mike Young & Co. have won five games in a row against Mike Brey's squad, including an 87-80 contest in last year's ACC tournament quarterfinals in Brooklyn.
Should Virginia Tech advance, it would face No. 6 seed NC State. The Wolfpack beat the Hokies by four, 73-69, back in Cassell Coliseum on Jan. 8. At the time, it was their fourth straight loss.
No. 3 seed Clemson awaits after that, a team Tech lost two twice this season. The Tigers won the first game in Blacksburg on Jan. 4, 68-65, and Tech couldn't close the door in the return trip to Clemson, falling by one, 51-50.
