AJ Swinton
Small Forward, Class of 2024
Sierra Canyon/Oak Hill/DeMatha
6-6, 210

Mike Young and Virginia Tech basketball picked up a big commitment on Friday afternoon when 4-star forward AJ Swinton announced his decision to On3. He chose the Hokies over Maryland, and he also had offers from Ohio State, Xavier, Georgetown and others.

Swinton is a 4-star prospect, and his overall ranking of No. 78 by Rivals is his highest mark among all of the recruiting services. He visited Blacksburg twice - once in December for the North Carolina game and once for Virginia Tech’s victory over Pitt.

Though he’s listed as a 6-5, 180 small forward by the recruiting services, Swinton is actually 6-6 and closer to 210. Though he can play on the wing as a small forward, it’s also possible that he could develop into a Justyn Mutts type of power forward. He has a 7-2 wingspan.

Though Swinton currently plays at Sierra Canyon in California, he previously played at Oak Hill Academy in Virginia. Before that, he played under current Virginia Tech assistant coach Mike Jones at DeMatha.

Swinton is the first commitment of Virginia Tech’s 2024 recruiting class, and he’ll be eligible to sign with the Hokies in November.
