Virginia Tech picked up a transfer portal commitment from Georgia Southern’s Derrick Canteen on Monday night. A a two-year starter for the Eagles, he has three years of eligibility remaining.

A 2019 signee, Canteen redshirted that year and then broke into the starting lineup as a redshirt freshman in 2020. He was named a Freshman All-American by The Football Writers Association of America as well as The Athletic, and he also earned First Team All-Sun Belt honors. He broke up 10 passes that year and tied for the FBS lead with six interceptions.

As a sophomore in 2021, Canteen was sidelined after just two games due to a pectoral injury and missed the remainder of the season. He returned as a full-time starter in 2022 and had another good season on the field for Georgia Southern. He is expected to get a medical hardship waiver for the 2021 injury, and since 2020 doesn’t count towards eligibility, he should have three years remaining despite already playing nearly 1,600 snaps in college.

With the addition of Canteen, Virginia Tech now has three proven cornerbacks on the roster for 2023 with Dorian Strong and Mansoor Delane.

The Hokies currently have 18 scholarship defensive backs with Canteen's commitment. In total, that's 43 scholarships on the defensive side of the ball and 92 for the entire team.
