We're 55 days away from the start of college basketball season, and the conference schedules are finally here. Along with the rest of the ACC, Virginia Tech men's basketball and Mike Young released their schedule at 2 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hokies open their 2022-23 campaign on Monday, Nov. 7 against Delaware State. Tech's ACC opener is Sunday, Dec. 4 against Hubert Davis and North Carolina.

The Schedule Rotation: Home, Away and Both

Back in 2019, the ACC released its scheduling rotation for the next three seasons. 2021-22 was the final year of that matrix, but the league has renewed it, so it's back to the beginning.

Virginia Tech’s two "rivals" are Miami and Virginia, meaning they'll meet twice every season. Here's the rotation for this season, listed in order of when Tech plays each team:

Home only: North Carolina, NC State, Pitt, Florida State
Away only: Wake Forest, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Louisville
Both Home/Away: Boston College, Clemson, Virginia, Duke, Syracuse, Miami

Notes, Thoughts and Takeaways

The reigning ACC Tournament champions have a challenging conference slate, though the non-conference shouldn't be super challenging. Minnesota, Dayton and Oklahoma State will all test the Hokies, as will the Charleston Classic, but unlike last year, they don't have a true road game until Dec. 21 at Boston College. In 2021-22, Tech road tripped up to Annapolis and College Park in the first month of the season and came away with two wins. Instead, seven of Tech's 11 non-conference games are at home; the other four are at neutral sites, three of which are in Charleston.

Opening the ACC campaign against North Carolina will be a must-watch game. The national runner-up fell to the Hokies in Brooklyn in the ACC Tournament in March but quickly flipped a switch in the NCAA Tournament. It'll mark the third consecutive season Tech has opened ACC play in Cassell Coliseum (Wake Forest in 2021, Clemson in 2020). It'll also be the third time VT and UNC have squared off in an ACC opener. The other two instances were in 2009 (in Chapel Hill) and in 2004 (Blacksburg). Ironically, the latter was Tech's inaugural game after joining the conference that year.

The most difficult month of the schedule will likely be January. The Hokies play seven total games - four at home with three away contests sandwiched in between. They'll see Clemson and Syracuse twice each, and NC State, Virginia and Duke once. Include the Miami game in Coral Gables on Feb. 1 and that's an eight-game stretch against opponents that Tech was 6-5 against in 2021-22. Note that the Duke game is on a Monday, meaning it will likely be on ESPN as part of "Big Monday."

Virginia Tech’s home games over break without students (Dec. 14-Jan. 17) are against Grambling State, Clemson and NC State. That's much better than playing Duke or Virginia at that time.

Tech will play North Carolina in December and won’t see the Tar Heels again unless they meet in the ACC Tournament. It’s the opposite for Louisville and Florida State, who the Hokies play once each in the last two games of the season.
