On Thursday, Virginia Tech and Brent Pry announced the hiring of Brad Glenn as the team's quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. Glenn is the sixth addition to Pry's new coaching staff. (For all articles related to coaching staff hires by Pry, click here.)
Glenn ventures to Blacksburg from Georgia State, where he was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach since 2019. He has 18 years of college coaching experience under his belt. Glenn had stops at Elon (one year), Appalachian State (seven years), Western Carolina (seven years) prior to joining Shawn Elliott's staff at Georgia State.
Previous Roles
In Boone, N.C. with the Mountaineers, Glenn was on staff (2005-11) for three FCS National Championships from 2005-07. He helped develop two SoCon Offensive Players of the Year in Armanti Edwards (QB) and DeAndre Pressley (WR). Edwards was a third round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft and helped lead Appalachian State to the national title in 2006 and 2007. He also won the Walter Payton Award for the top offensive player in the FCS twice.
At Western Carolina (2012-18), Glenn's quarterbacks put up outstanding numbers in his seven-year tenure. In the last five seasons, the Catamounts' quarterbacks averaged over 2,400 yards passing and 600 yards rushing per season. Troy Mitchell, who he coached in his first year, departed Cullowhee, N.C. as the program's all-time leader in total offense.
After joining Elliott's staff in Atlanta in February of 2019, whom he coached alongside at Appalachian State, the Panthers' offense exploded.
In his first year in 2019, Georgia State was 13th in the FBS in rushing yards per game (241.6), and eight offensive players earned All-Sun Belt honors, highlighted by quarterback Dan Ellington. Though he missed four games, Ellington still finished the season with 2,447 yards through the air and 22 TDs, coupled with 668 rush yards and six scores.
As a result of his spectacular offense, one that broke numerous school records, Glenn was nominated for the Broyles Award, which is presented to the top assistant coach in the country. He is the second assistant on Pry's new staff to have that honor, joining Stu Holt, who was a nominee in 2013 at USF.
In 2020, Glenn's unit averaged 420.4 yards per game. His offenses in his first two seasons were very balanced: 212 yards on the ground, 220 through the air. Per his Georgia State bio, six of his offensive players - two offensive linemen, two receivers, a tight end and a running back - earned All-Sun Belt honors.
This season, Georgia State finished 7-5 and Glenn had the No. 8 rushing offense in the country. The unit also was No. 31 in red zone offense (88.2%).
A 1995 graduate of Clemson, Glenn hails from Seneca, S.C. He got his coaching start at Greer High School as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, where he spent six yers (1995-00).
Per USA Today, his salary with the Panthers in 2021 was $260,000. The one assistant on Pry's staff he has coached with is Shawn Quinn, who was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Western Carolina from 2013-15 while Glenn was the associate head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Glenn has also coached at many of the same places as others on the new VT staff. Pry and Holt also coached at Western Carolina, and Holt coached at Appalachian State.
Reported Staff
Matt Zenitz (On3) and Adam Rittenberg (ESPN) have both reported that Tyler Bowen, the current tight ends coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars and a former assistant at Penn State, is set to become Virginia Tech's next offensive coordinator. Because of NFL contract rules, the hire cannot be announced until the end of the league's season in January.
Bowen, 32, played at Maryland and got his start as a student assistant in College Park in 2010. He was a graduate assistant at Penn State in 2014, had a stop as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Fordham in 2015-16, and ventured back to Happy Valley in 2018. Bowen wore many hats at Penn State in three seasons, from tight ends coach and offensive recruiting coordinator to co-offensive coordinator. He joined the staff in Jacksonville in February of 2021.
