We're 54 days away from college basketball season and the schedules are here. Virginia Tech women's basketball released its schedule last night, and Mike Young and the men's team released theirs tonight.
The Hokies open their 2021-22 campaign in Cassell Coliseum on Tuesday, Nov. 9 against Maine. Tech's ACC opener is Saturday, Dec. 4 in Blacksburg against Wake Forest.
Virginia Tech released its non-conference schedule back in mid-August. On Thursday, the ACC announced each school's conference schedule on the ACC Network.

The Schedule Rotation: Home, Away and Both
Ahead of the 2019-20 season, the ACC released the schedule rotation for the next three seasons. This is the final year of the rotation, so it'll be interesting to see if the conference changes anything for next year.Virginia Tech's two rivals, two teams the Hokies play home and away every season, are Miami and Virginia. This season, the rotation is as follows, in order of when Tech plays each team:
Home Only: Wake Forest, Notre Dame, Syracuse and Louisville
Away Only: Duke, Boston College, Florida State and Clemson
Both Home and Away: North Carolina, Pitt, NC State and Georgia Tech
Important Notes, Thoughts and Takeaways
- Virginia Tech's second and third ACC matchups are both on the road in late December in North Carolina against the two most historic basketball schools in the conference. Playing at Duke and then at North Carolina with Christmas in between is a heckuva way to start the conference schedule.
- December is going to be a hectic month for the Hokies. Tech plays seven games. Four are on the road, two are at home and one at a neutral site. Games at Maryland, at Dayton, at Duke and at North Carolina... St. Bonaventure in Charlotte is no slouch, either. If Virginia Tech can get through that month with four-to-five wins, that's a good sign.
- As you see in the table above, the Hokies have SIX games at 9 p.m. or later, five in ACC play. Only two of those games - Georgia Tech and Louisville - are at home. 15 games still don't have tip times. That's a lot of late nights for fans watching Virginia Tech play on television, and a lot of late-night traveling for VT.
- Virginia Tech's home games over break (without students) are against Pitt, NC State and Notre Dame. That's much better than a Duke or a Virginia. On the flip side, the Hokies get to play in Cameron Indoor and the Dean Dome while the students are away. That's a positive.
- There are four confirmed games on ESPN2, one on ESPN (Big Monday on Valentines Day vs. UVa) and five that have the potential to be on ESPN or ESPN2. That's a lot of eyes on the Hokies. Unfortunately for fans who have Comcast, there are 12 games on the ACC Network. Hopefully that gets sorted out soon.
- Three home games in a seven-day span in February against Syracuse (0-1 last season), Virginia (1-0) and North Carolina (0-1) is going to be difficult. Luckily, all three of the games are at home. The Virginia game is a 7 p.m. tip, while the other two are TBA. If it's a favorable tip time, Cassell Coliseum should be packed.
- Tech will play Wake Forest in December and won't see the Demon Deacons again until the ACC Tournament. It's the opposite for Louisville and Clemson, who the Hokies play once each, both in March.
- Three of Tech's last four games are on the road at Georgia Tech, Miami and Clemson. The Hokies are 3-0 against Clemson in Young's short tenure but have always played Miami close and needed a miracle from Hunter Cattoor to win in overtime last season. Tech has yet to beat Josh Pastner and the Yellow Jackets under Young, and the Hokies haven't beaten Louisville since 1991 - they've lost 17 straight. It won't be an easy last few games.
