Virginia Tech quarterback Quincy Patterson has decided to enter the transfer portal according to head coach Justin Fuente.  Joining Patterson in the portal is fellow redshirt sophomore Darryle Simmons, both members of the 2018 recruiting class, as well as redshirt freshman wideout Elijah Bowick.

Patterson came to Virginia Tech from Chicago after a very good showing at the Elite 11 quarterback competition.  He drew rave reviews from many, including Elite 11 instructor and former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer.  Everyone knew Patterson was a raw player at the time, but they also believed he had a very high ceiling.

After redshirting in 2018, Patterson played a bit in 2019, leading the Hokies to a six-overtime victory over UNC after Hendon Hooker was injured and Ryan Willis was benched.  He started the next week’s game against Notre Dame.  Patterson also filled in admirably this season against NC State with Hendon Hooker out and Braxton Burmeister picking up an injury during the game.

For his career, Patterson was 22-of-52 (42.3%) for 359 yards, with four touchdowns and one interception.  He also ran for 333 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 4.5 yards per carry.

Darryle Simmons came to Blacksburg from Philadelphia as a 3-star or 4-star wide receiver, depending on which scouting service you use.  He caught one pass last season as a redshirt freshman.  He missed the first half of the 2020 season with an injury, and couldn’t break into the playing rotation among his return.

Bowick was a prolific receiver from Charlotte who picked the Hokies over Notre Dame, Georgia, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and many others.  However, he tore his ACL and damaged his meniscus while redshirting last season.  He was only cleared to return to football activities last month, and he hasn’t been able to crack the playing rotation at wide receiver.
